Family-Driven

Heart of Fratello

With nearly 50 years rooted in the coffee industry, our commitment to sourcing and roasting the world's finest beans enables us to deliver a remarkable coffee experience to our wholesale customers and café patrons. We invite you to discover the family-driven heart and soul behind Fratello Coffee Roasters, and join us on our passionate journey to elevate the coffee world.

The Brothers: Continuing a 50-Year Family Legacy in Coffee

Our father, Cam Prefontaine, initiated us into the coffee culture through our family's first venture, Fontaine Beverages. From those early years in 1974, destined for a life steeped in this culture, we—Chris, Jason, and Russ—took our first entrepreneurial leap in 1991, co-founding Espuccino Imports. This venture quickly gained prominence, becoming North America's third-largest distributor of Nuova Simonelli espresso machines.

In 1997, we reached a critical juncture. We purchased Custom Gourmet Coffee from our parents and merged it with Espuccino Imports. This allowed us to create Fratello Coffee Roasters, a one-stop-shop for coffee lovers. Leveraging nearly five decades of family involvement in the industry, our mission was ambitious but clear: we aimed to redefine the coffee experience in Calgary and Western Canada while pushing the boundaries of industry innovation. This led to the creation of the renowned Slayer Espresso machine in 2007, which set new global standards for brewing coffee.

In 2011, we ventured into the café scene with the launch of Analog Coffee. This wasn't just another café; it was the embodiment of our vision for a world-class coffee experience. Though we've since sold this division, it marked a significant chapter in our journey. Carrying forward nearly 50 years of family expertise, now, we're channeling our collective decades of experience and passion back into Fratello Coffee Roasters, with a renewed focus on refining and elevating every aspect of the company.

Meet the Prefontaine Brothers

CHRIS PREFONTAINE

Chris Prefontaine's roots in the coffee industry date back to his high school years when he started out at his father's company, Custom Gourmet Coffee. Together with his brother Jason, Chris co-founded Espuccino Imports in 1991. Within a short span of three years, the enterprise rose to become North America's third-largest distributor of Nuova Simonelli espresso machines.

In 1997, Chris and Jason teamed up with their younger brother Russ to purchase Custom Gourmet Coffee from their parents, later rebranding it as Fratello Coffee. The aim was clear: to provide top-quality coffee in Calgary and across Western Canada. The company’s contributions to coffee culture have been significant, with innovations such as the Slayer espresso machine and the establishment of the thriving Analog Café chain, which remains a testament to Fratello's commitment to quality and creativity.

RUSS PREFONTAINE

Russ Prefontaine has been steeped in the world of coffee since his early years, observing the family business from the sidelines before diving in full-time in 1994. Joining his older brothers, Chris and Jason, at Espuccino Imports, Russ became an integral part of a company that specialized in Nuova Simonelli equipment, installation, and service. In 1997, the trio purchased their parents' roasting company, consolidating roasting, equipment, training, and service under one unified brand.

Today, Russ serves as Fratello’s Director of Coffee, dedicating his expertise to source the finest beans. He frequently traverses the globe to connect directly with farmers, ensuring Fratello's commitment to quality from the ground up. Among his noteworthy accomplishments, Russ collaborated with his brothers to develop the first Slayer Espresso machines. He and Chris also co-founded Analog Coffee, initially at the Calgary Farmers' Market and then as a stand-alone Analog Café on 17th Avenue SW in 2012, further enriching Calgary's coffee culture.

Onward and Upward!

With a renewed focus on refining and elevating every aspect of Fratello Coffee Roasters, we're channeling our collective passion and decades of experience back into the company. We continue to push the boundaries, aiming to be trailblazers in the coffee world.
